There are still printers, book manufacturers, commercial printers, publication printers, and international buyers looking for the right used web offset equipment. The challenge is that these are not impulse purchases. A buyer looking at a used web press has to think about space, power, dryers, chillers, pollution control, folders, controls, spare parts, rigging, freight, and installation.
The Sales Process Has to Be Realistic
A web offset press may have value as a complete line, as a partial line, as components, or as a parts source. Folders, splicers, chill rolls, stackers, RTOs, compressors, plate benders, and electrical cabinets may each have their own buyer pool.
Sometimes the best recovery comes from selling the system as a package. Other times, selling selected components separately makes more sense.
Buyers Need Clear Information
Buyers will want clear information before moving forward. Important details include cutoff, web width, number of units, dryer type, folder model, controls, drives, age, condition, and whether the equipment is still installed.
Photos and videos are important, but so is an honest conversation about what is included and what is not. Missing parts, obsolete controls, removed blanket washers, dryer requirements, pollution control, and site access can all affect the buyer’s total project cost.
Project Cost Matters as Much as Machine Price
With web offset equipment, the purchase price is only one part of the decision. Rigging, freight, installation, utilities, electrical work, dryers, chillers, RTO systems, controls, and replacement parts can change the economics of the deal quickly.
A machine may be priced correctly, but if the full project cost gets too high, the buyer may not be able to justify the purchase. That is why sellers need to understand the realistic buyer pool and how the equipment will likely be used.
The Right Buyer Is Still Out There
Machinery Solutions Group has experience selling and managing web offset assets, including press systems, bindery lines, pressroom support equipment, and plant clear-outs.
For sellers, the key is to identify the real buyer pool early and build the sale plan around the equipment’s best use. Web offset equipment still has value, but it needs the right buyer, the right information, and the right project plan.
